Wormburners Capture First
Mason-Dixon Cup

The Wormburners Golf Club of Washington, DC captured its first Mason-Dixon Cup with a 10 to 5 victory over The Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia.  The emphatic victory was the Wormburners' first in the four year history of the event.  The annual Ryder Cup style matches were contested at the South Riding and Pleasant Valley golf courses in Northern Virginia during the second weekend of October.

The Wormburners captured the first three better-ball matches on Saturday before GTGP closed strong to win the final two matches.  For GTGP, Tom Amo and Brian Towler won 1 up while Shawn Gross and Tim Carolan teamed for a 3 and 2 victory.  Three of Saturday's five matches were decided on the final hole.

On Sunday, any hope of a GTGP comeback was put to rest when the Wormburners won five of the first six matches.  GTGP member Bill Casey managed a halve to earn the only half point from those matches.  Tom Amo and Richard Dunn won their matches, and Orest Marschalok halved his match for a strong GTGP finish, but it was not enough to overcome the strong early play from the Wormburners.  Co-captain Tom Amo was the only GTGP member to earn a 2-0 record in this year's competition.

The Mason-Dixon Cup began in 2005 as a friendly competition between the clubs based in Philadelphia and Washington, respectively.  The Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia won the inaugural event 10-5, and won again in 2006 by a 10 1/2 to 4 1/2 margin and 2007 by an 8-7 margin.  GTGP will host the 2009 event at a location yet to be determined.
